Researchers from Ceará are looking for a company to register the technique in the National Sanitary Surveillance Agency (Anvisa), which should make the use of therapy possible in burn treatment centers throughout the country
The treatment against burns using skin of tilapia fish, a pioneer method developed in Ceará, takes another step forward in its expansion. The researchers started the search for the company that must register the method at the National Sanitary Surveillance Agency (Anvisa), which may make it possible to use the therapeutic resource in burn treatment centers throughout the country. In Ceará, more than 300 people already benefited.
Last Tuesday (26), President Jair Bolsonaro highlighted the method of healing in publication on Twitter, announcing the promotion of studies under the command of the National Secretary of Fisheries, Jorge Seif Júnior, with the Ministry of Health. The mention, in the evaluation of the president of the Institute of Support to Burns (IAQ) and coordinator of the research, physician from the state of Ceará, Edmar Maciel, was important for the progress of the process.
"This is already a step for the company that registers know that the Ministry of Health recognizes the product as an important thing for health," he says.
According to Maciel, the secretary Jorge Seif Júnior already made the first contact, on Wednesday (27), to discuss the treatment presentation meeting, for now without a defined date. "We are waiting to spend the Carnival period to be scheduled our visit, to talk about the research in Brasilia," he says.
In addition to Ceará, the research is already used in the states of Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Goiás and Pernambuco, benefiting almost 500 people in the country in the last five years. At the international level, Colombia, Germany and the United States also develop studies based on the Ceará technique, developed by the Center for Research and Development in Medicine (NPDM) of the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), under the coordination of Professor Odorico Moraes . The treatment is used with patients of the Nucleus of Burns of the Institute Dr. José Frota (IJF) since 2016.
The skin of tilapia, one of the main freshwater fish species in Brazil, acts as a biological and temporary dressing, while the healing process of 2nd and 3rd degree burns occurs. The method is considered more effective by closing the wound, avoiding infections due to external contamination and loss of fluids and proteins.
Another advantage already mentioned is in minimizing discomfort and pain to patients, since the natural dressing can be maintained for several days in the treatment of injured skin, unlike the common ones, which need to be changed daily. For this reason, service costs are reduced.
